Greetings from a delightful day in Iowa….
Temps have been in the 70′s with a nice cool breeze. Not exactly fall weather, but the lower temps are a welcome change.
Friday evening I spent 90 minutes washing crud and dust off of walls with water and Pine Sol. Was able to finsh the hallway, bathroom and the master bedroom. This morning I was able to finish up the 2nd bedroom and the utility room Cleaning the various pipes and ducts around the water heater and furnace was not much fun. Some spots had so much dust buildup that I needed to use the vacuum cleaner first. So all of the walls are now cleaned. To me it feels, and smells, so much better without food, boogers and grime.
John spent the morning working on plumbing issues. First was to replace an outside faucet that had a ruptured water pipe leading to it. John says the damage was caused by someone leaving water running to a garden hose in freezing weather. Then the ice caused the copper water pipe to split open. This all occurred before we purchased the building, but we put off fixing it until the apartment was empty since we needed to open up the dry wall.
John then replaced the faucets where the washing machine connects to in the utility room. One of the old faucets was badly corroded and broke when John removed the washing machine last week.
Then I removed all of the old closet doors and tracks they were hung on. They were not difficult to remove – just big and bulky. Tomorrow John will start to install the new mirrored doors that were delivered last week.
Last thing I worked on today was the ceilings. Removed the furnace registers and used a kitchen broom to remove dust. Tomorrow I plan on painting the ceiling. They are generally in good condition except for an area in the bathroom – someone in the past had patched it up, but their patch job does not match the rest of the ceiling. Think we just need to add some “popcorn” texture to it before I paint.
Once the ceilings get painted then John can install the new lighting and I can then start to prepare the walls to be painted. Still need to patch up lots of wall blemishes, holes, nail holes, and go on. Doctoring up walls will be my primary job next week after work…
