Greetings from a windy fall day in West Des Moines…

The weather has been unsettled most of the week.  Lots of fronts coming through bringing rain with them.  We need the rain, so wish it would rain more then what we have been receiving.  Today had some light rain – light enough to keep the pavement wet, but that was about it…

Last night John had a big group presentation for one of his classes.  How it was supposed to go is that all of the groups would connect to a single online meeting room and view/listen to each of the presentations.  That way each group could see what others did.  Due to technical difficulties the big group session was cancelled and each group went off and recorded their presentations separately.  John seemed quite disappointed in the whole affair, especially after spending weeks on the presentation….  Oh well – he only has 14 more days of school to do.  Keeping my fingers crossed that he gets A’s in his final classes….

The carpet guy came and measured for carpeting and new kitchen linoleum on Monday.  The carpeting is for the apartment below us that will be vacant early next month.  Going with a beige frieze carpet with specks of a darker brown in it.  Think it will look nice against the old brown woodwork.  For the linoleum just went with a simple white tile pattern.  Estimate came in at $1,800.00.  Includes removing and disposing of the old flooring and installing the new.  Estimate was about what we were expecting.  Hoping the only other expenses needed to prepare the apartment for new tenants will be paint, cleaning supplies and some new window blinds.

John has been getting some response to the for rent ad on Craigslist.  We have been showing tenants our apartment and explaining it has the exact same floor plan, newer kitchen and newer appliances.  Been having to keep the apartment extra clean and organized for the showings – is a bit like trying to sell your house.  For the most I part can have it ready to show after 10 minutes of dusting, putting stuff away and strategic Windex use.  So far the people checking out the apartment seem happy with what they see.  Time will tell – have not received an actual rental application yet….

John also had an “Apartment for rent” sign made for the front yard by a local FastSigns.  Went with one that has a heavy metal frame that you slide the sign into.  Came to $65.00 but should last a long time.  Majority of the cost was for the frame.  We can also slide the sign out of the frame and slide a different one into if we need.  Will be interesting to see how many phone calls he gets as a result of the sign.  Will post a picture of it soon…

With fall weather setting in, have been using the pressure cooker to make some yummy meals.  Last night made a beef stew with stew meat, potatoes, onions, carrots and a can of crushed tomatoes.  Took 25 minutes to cook and it turned out delicious.  The beef turned out very tender and the veggies were not mushy.  Tonight did a Jenny-O Turkey ham with carrots and onion in the pressure cooker.  Took 20 minutes to cook and it also turned out well.  Was a bit worried the processed turkey would dry out, but it did not. Is cool to be able to cook the meat in about the same amount of time it takes to prepare a package of frozen lasagna in the microwave.

Not much else going on.  Hoping the weather is decent this weekend – would like to wash and wax the RV for the winter.  Not my favorite task, but like the RV to look nice parked next to the apartment building. Heading off to play Warcraft for awhile…
