Greetings from a cool but nice fall day in West Des Moines, IA.

You can definitely tell it is November out because of a definite chill in the air.  Today it did get into the lower 50’s – warm enough to just wear a hoodie outside.  We are expecting cooler temperatures to come our way this week…

Last night we went to a party at Don and Troy’s place in Ames, IA.  Was a fun time – got to see friends that we only see at their gatherings and spend time with Don/Troy.  Did my turn with the karaoke machine doing a fabulous version (couch, couch) of Jolene by Dolly Parton.  I belted it out with my best Missouri/Texan drawl… 🙂  Was almost drunk enough to sing Proud Mary, but not quite…  It takes us an hour to drive to Ames so did not make it home until 11:30pm…

Been dealing with the new tenants getting cable TV installed by Mediacom.  After two weeks they still do not have service.  The first installer said there was not enough “PEU’s” on the pole to connect another service to – so a different team would have to be dispatched to do the install.  The second team was supposed to have arrived and done their thing…. A third installer showed up and said the second team did not do their part in installing a larger “PEU” – and around and around they go.  In the process they ended up drilling holes in the siding installing coax cable to nowhere and putting a hook in the soffit.  The hook is not doing anything because they never got far enough along to run the cable from the pole.  John is livid about the holes being punched in the new siding – after I repeatedly explained to each installer to not make any holes in the siding…

Today new tenants said they cancelled their Mediacom order and are having DirecTV come on Monday to get them setup.  They should go much better because that is what the previous tenants had.  John says their is no reason they can’t connect into our existing satellite dish and avoid installing another dish on the roof.  Have direct orders to call John if the installer does not agree….  This should be interesting.

Ice skating lessons are going strong – have lessons both on Saturday and Sunday afternoons now – one at Buccaneer Arena and one at Metro Ice.  Lessons are put on by two different ice skating clubs.  The two clubs don’t get along (long story) so I don’t tell them I’m taking lessons at the other place – easier that way 🙂

So getting a decent amount of time in.  Saturday I’m on the ice for an hour – 30 minute warmup/practice and then a 30 minute lesson.  On Sunday it is just a 30 minute lesson – no warmup before hand.  Still doing lots of different backwards moves like going backwards on one foot and backwards crossovers.  Starting to get the hang of some of the more difficult moves.  The largest thing I need to work on is my posture – not leaning forward/backwards too much, correct hand/arm locations and looking ahead.

This coming Thursday the outside skating rink at Brenton Plaza will be opening for the season.  The first night they have local DJ’s, free food, music and hockey players from the Buccaneers.  Is a fun time so planning on attending.  Hope to see some of my “downtown skating buddies” that I’ve not seen since last winter.  Will be nice to skate downtown most any evening I want.  Only bad part about the downtown rink is that the ice is kinda crappy because of the amount of people on it.  At times it is like ice skating on a snow cone…

Plans are set for obtaining a marriage license this coming Friday.  Going to meet up with Don/Troy & Mitch (our 3rd party) around 11:00am at the courthouse, fill out the paperwork then go out for lunch.  This week I need to start calling the local judges to see if they can perform the actually ceremony some evening after work.  Iowa requires a 3 day waiting period after the license is obtained before you can actually be married.  The recorder’s office provides a list of Judges: Polk County Judges.  Going to try Judge Robert Hanson first since he is one of the judges who ruled for Same Sex Marriage in Iowa – here’s an article from the New York Times about it:  Judge Overturns Iowa Ban on Same-Sex Marriage.  All of the judges require the ceremony not take place in the court house – my guess is that if it takes place elsewhere they can charge $200.00.  We are thinking just a quick/simple ceremony in or outside the Iowa Capital would be nice – will see how it goes…

Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day but we are both working.  I could have had the day off, but I get a additional “floating holiday” if it work it – so will be able to have an additional day off of work around Christmas.  Still have to work the day after Thanksgiving since I’m “backup on call”…

Not much else going on – going to take a nice long shower, heat up some apple cider in the microwave and relax a bit.  My feet are a bit sore from all of the ice skating 🙂
