Greetings from a snowy Thomson, IL…

It started to snow early this morning and we have around 2 inches of accumulation. Here’s a short video of Dad out shoveling snow:

Today I’m still working on getting Windows 7 setup on Mom’s Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop. I’m doing an in place upgrade to avoid having to setup internet, virus scan, photos, bookmarks again. It is taking forever… last night I attempted the upgrade, but it would not continue until Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista was installed – no idea why it was not automatically installed as part of Windows update… I ended up going to Microsoft.com and manually locating and installing it… all 405 megs of it… download speeds here ran around 90 mbps, but still took around 90 minutes to download.. then another hour to install…

Then this morning I started the Windows 7 upgrade again… This time it would not continue until I uninstalled the Micro Trend virus protection… another 45 minutes while I did the program uninstall and reboot… Then attempted the upgrade again and it started this time. Started the upgrade at 9:00am, and it is now finally finishing up at 12:45pm… Hope it is worth is… Vista was nasty to use… kept getting pop-up windows all the time asking if this is ok to run the program that you just asked it to run and the virus software was always in the continual state of downloading updates and installing them…

Also working on getting a Livio Internet Radio configured to Mom and Dad’s favorite stations and artists. It can use Pandora, so got them setup on Pandora and explained to them how it works with setting up stations and giving songs the thumb-up or thumb-down to define the songs you like to listen to….

I’m also helping Dad get going with Facebook… he has been playing Farmville for the past few days.. seems to be getting the hang of it…

This afternoon we will probably run over to Clinton, IA to check out some after Christmas sales. I don’t need anything, so not concerned about getting there really early… usually going out later is a more pleasant experience. John’s Birthday is coming up on January 2nd, so maybe I will find something that he would like….

Prince has been having fun exploring Mom and Dad’s house. I don’t see very much of him, but he surfaces now and then for food and to say hi… He has been getting along fine with my parents cat, Tommer… they basically sit and stare at each other… both cats seem somewhat meek… so don’t expect any fights or problems…… they would have done that by now if there were going to…

The Windows 7 upgrade has completed, now downloading updates – only 9 critical updates and 4 non-critical ones so far.. not bad….
